Why are Raised Vegetable Beds Better?

Various studies have shown that raised beds can produce 1.4 to 2 times more vegetables per square metre than ordinary garden beds. Here are a few reasons why they work:

• Soil quality: All vegetables require nutrient rich soil however not every garden is blessed with the perfect soil. Instead of you having to change your soil type & pH levels, you can install a raised vegetable bed filled with good quality soil & compost
• Reduced soil compaction: Plant roots need air to breathe and the ability to push through the soil to grow, so by reducing soil compaction (from walking on your soil) your vegetables will be healthier and have better growth
• Size: Our range of raised beds enables you to grow as much or as little as you can fit in your garden. The key is to position your bed where it catches the sun
• Warm soil: Warmth is required both to germinate seeds and to facilitate plant growth so when soil is raised above ground level, solar heat is absorbed quicker and your growing season is extended
• Pest control: Cloches can be clipped on within minutes to keep off birds or insects such as Cabbage Butterfly. Even rabbits find it harder to get into raised beds!
• Drainage: Soil drainage is easier to manage in a raised bed thereby reducing the risk of saturated plant roots
• Depth: Vegetables can extend deeper into the soil which in turn produces high yielding and healthy crops
• Back saver: There is less bending involved for the raised bed gardener and if you purchase beds with a ledge you can even sit on them!

Macrocarpa Raised Beds

All our raised beds are made from Untreated Macrocarpa, a very durable and long lasting timber. Additionally, recent research is showing that the chemicals used to treat other types of timber (CCA - Copper Chromium and Arsenic) can leach from the wood into your soil and plants, thereby posing health risks. We firmly believe that using Untreated Macrocarpa is a safe, organic alternative to CCA treated timber.
